Distance: 10 miles
We return to the Berwickshire Coast for this popular ornithological walk, led by expert Richard Watt. This is a fine circular walk, part coastal, part farmland. We begin at St. Abb's Head, with a symphony of bird sound. Looking down at the sea stacks, we can expect to identify guillemots, razorbills, shags and even the occasional puffin. Last May our final tally was 47 different species of bird life, and a captive budgerigar! From Pettico Wick, with its extraordinary folding rock strata, we head north along an airy cliff top path. This is a walk of outstanding coastal views. Looking south we see as far as Bamburgh Castle. On the cliff top there is a set of four admiralty distance markers, measuring out a nautical mile. In the days before autopilot and GPS, these poles were used to gauge the maximum speed of new sea vessels, after construction. |
Inland there are good views of Coldingham Loch. At one point our path drops 300 or more feet to sea level. The ruins of Fast Rock Castle cling to a rocky plateau further up the coast. Our afternoon takes us inland, back to St. Abb's Head. A little elevation goes a long way. From a gently rising farm road we enjoy sweeping views of the Berwickshire coast a mile to our left. We pass Coldingham Loch and rejoin the coastal path. At Pettico Wick we may see a diver or two emerging from the sea. Join us for a beautiful and informative walk!
We have tea at St. Abbs Head.
