A gentle stroll through the “Hills of Home” followed by a bowl of soup at the Allan Ramsay Inn, Carlops.
- Length: About 6 miles (half day walk)
- Grading: Easy/Moderate (fairly steep ascent of Patie’s Hill)
- Travel: About 30 minutes from central Edinburgh
Just within Border country, this lovely circular walk is centred on the small village of Carlops, fifteen miles south west of Edinburgh. It takes us into a remote part of the Pentland Hills. We walk through Habbie's Howe - a beautiful wooded gorge and the backdrop to Allan Ramsay's "Gentle Shepherd”. We visit the North Esk Reservoir with its waterfowl and marsh birds and from Patie's Hill (443 metres) we can expect some fine views of the Moorfoots and the Upper Tweed Valley. We finish at the Allan Ramsay Inn.
