What
to bring
However dramatic and exhilarating, Scottish weather is
unpredictable and can change rapidly.
For walking in the Scottish Borders whether up in the hills or along the
River Tweed, the following are essential:
- Walking boots:
These can be leather or gortex but you must
have some form of ankle support. If your
boots are new, you should take any opportunity to break them in before the
weekend; even wear them round the house.
- Rainwear:
Both a cagoule
and waterproof trousers are necessary.
- Light rucksack:
This is obviously useful for personal items eg
camera and binoculars, as well as rainwear.
- Waterbottle:
To avoid dehydration, whatever
the weather, it’s essential to take water.
Waterbottles can be topped up at
lunchtime or at pick up points.
- Energy
bar:
Light snack to carry in your
rucksack.
- Hats:
Some form of headgear is
necessary depending on the season: a sun
hat during the summer, a woolly hat during the spring.
- Gloves:
These may well be necessary in
April.
- Suncream
The following may
also be useful:
- Telescopic
walking pole/s:
These can very helpful
taking the weight of your knees on downhill stretches and, in any terrain,
enabling you to build up a good rhythm.
We carry a first aid
kit at all times.
