THE JOHN BUCHAN WAY

A glorious traverse of the Upper Tweed Valley, and a celebration of the landscape which John Buchan loved. Walk the John Buchan Way in one day (13 miles) and enjoy a shorter circular walk  the next morning.   Stay in Peebles at the very comfortable and centrally located Tontine Hotel. This is a two night trip with an option to extend your stay with additional walking days if you wish.

Your Itinerary

This self-guided route runs from the tiny village of Broughton to the bustling town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders. There is a bus from Peebles which will take you to the beginning of the route in Broughton.

Day 1    Arrive at Tontine Hotel in Peebles where you stay for the duration of the trip.

Day 2    Catch the 9.00am bus from outside hotel to Broughton  where the walk begins.  Visit the John Buchan Museum. The route takes you past  Broughton Green, Buchan’s mother’s family home. Broughton Place, a 1930s reinvention of a 17th century Scottish Tower House. Gradual ascent along a pleasant hill track to the pass between Hammer Head and Broomy Side (380m). Descent to Stobo in the Tweed Valley and  visit Stobo Kirk (linked to Merlin and St. Mungo).

 

 

Day 2 (cont.) Climb out of the Tweed Valley and enjoy fine views before descending to the Glack in the Manor Valley (c 200 m).  The second climb of the day is an ascent of Cademuir Hill (400 m) with its Iron Age Forts.  Peebles and The Tweed Valley is at your feet.   Distance 13 miles. 

Day 3  Morning circular walk along the River Tweed to Neidpath Castle and  Barns Tower (celebrated in Buchan's novel John Burnet of Barns).  Distance 6 miles.   Depart in afternoon.
