4* Hotel situated just outside Selkirk in secluded grounds. Restaurant and bistro.

YOUR ITINERARY

Day 1    Arrive at the Philipburn Hotel in Selkirk. All 3 nights will be spent at this hotel. 

Day 2    The walk begins with a fascinating visit to the Salmon Viewing Station and museum at Philiphaugh Estate by the Ettrick River.  Watch film footage of Salmon leaping up the cauld, and learn about the life cycle of the Salmon. If you are here at the right time of year, you might see the live salmon leaping up the Ettrick river. 

The route leads you to Bowhill, the beautifully maintained estate belonging to the Duke of Buccleuch. The Duchess’s Drive (a 19th century carriage drive) ascends Fastheugh Hill (501m) and from here there are supberb views.  Walk through Black Andrew Wood, famous for the Douglas Firs which grow here, and on past Newark Castle, a fine borders peel tower.   Distance 12 miles.

 

Day 3  The day begins with a climb up to the Three Brethren (464m) and where you pick up the Southern Upland Way. Descend to the Tweed Valley. Afternoon ascent of Peat Law from where there are wonderful views across to the Eildon  Hills.  Distance 12 miles.

Day  4  Depart.

During your stay we recommend a  visit to Locharron Mill in Selkirk, the biggest producer and exporter of tartan cloth.  If you are lucky you will see the mill in action.
