This is a classic Borders trip offering excellent value and the chance to stay at two very special Country Houses.  Our route leads you through a wonderful  combination of history and landscape, synonymous with the life of Sir Walter Scott. The picturesque rolling hills of the Tweed Valley provide a majestic backdrop to the historic houses and Abbeys en route.

Melrose Abbey

 

Fauhope House

Award winning 5* B&B situated just outside Melrose. Very comfortable, family run Arts & Crafts period home.

 

Lessudden House

Fortified tower house with links to Sir Walter Scott. Family run, warm and welcoming  B&B overlooking the Eildon Hills.

YOUR ITINERARY

Day    Arrive at Lessudden House in St. Boswells. The first two nights will be spent here.

Day 2     The route begins along the banks of the River Tweed on a beautiful stretch of the St. Cuthbert’s Way.  Optional visit to Dryburgh Abbey and from here climb up to Beymersyde and Scott’s View (favourite viewpoint of Sir Walter Scott). Enjoy fabulous views to the Eildon Hills. From the top of Beymersyde Hill views south to Smailholm Tower, where Scott stayed as a child. . Return to St. Boswells via the Borders Abbeys Way.  Stay a second night at St. Boswells.  Distance 8 miles.

 

 

Day 3   A beautiful day’s walk, crossing the Tweed Valley from St Boswells to Melrose, via the celebrated Eildon Hills.  Some of the route will follow the St.Cuthbert’s Way. Visit Melrose town and Abbey en route. Arrive at Fauhope House in Gattonside where you will stay for the next two nights.  Distance 6 miles.  

Day  4  Walk along the banks of the River Tweed to visit Abbotsford House, home of Sir Walter Scott. Walk through Rhymer’s Glen. Return to Fauhope House for the night. Distance 8 miles.

Day 5: Depart.
