In February we walk in the Moorfoot Hills just north of the mid Tweed Valley.
Our route begins at Walkerburn, founded by the mill owner Henry Ballantyne for his mill workers in the 1850s. We follow the course of the gentle Walker Burn through woodland to the ruins of Priesthope. Enjoying vignettes of the Tweed Valley we climb Kirnie Law (1538 feet/469 m) – and, here in the hills, encounter an unexpected reminder of the valley’s industrial past.
A fine ridge walk northwards takes us via Gledknowe to Windlestraw Law (2162 feet/659m). Potentially there are huge views of the Borders but much depends weather on this time of the year. |
Our low level alternative route takes us from Kirnie Law via Pirnie Law and its Iron Age fort to Innerleithen. We return to Walkerburn south of the Tweed paying a visit to the nature reserve at Plora Wood.
Forest and farm tracks; hill paths and rougher tracks through heather; higher terrain can be boggy.
Overall ascent to Windlestraw Law from Walkerburn (1790 feet/529m) 10 miles/16k and to Kirnie Law (1112 feet/339m) 6 miles/9.6 k.
We will have tea in a local tea room at the end of the walk.
